India Achieves Universal Electricity Access

In a landmark achievement, India has announced that it has achieved universal electricity access, with every village in the country now connected to the power grid. This milestone, part of the government’s ambitious "Saubhagya Scheme," marks a significant step in improving the quality of life for millions of rural residents.

The electrification of India’s rural areas has been a long-standing challenge due to the vastness of the country and the remoteness of many villages. However, under the Saubhagya Scheme, launched in 2017, over 28 million households have been electrified. The program focused on building infrastructure, such as power substations, transmission lines, and solar micro-grids, to ensure reliable electricity supply even in the most inaccessible regions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the efforts of engineers, local authorities, and private sector partners who made this achievement possible. "This is a historic moment for India. Access to electricity has had a transformative impact on rural communities. Schools now have lighting, allowing children to study after sunset, and healthcare facilities can operate more effectively with refrigeration for vaccines and medical equipment. Moreover, the availability of electricity has boosted small businesses, enabling villagers to use machinery and tools that were previously inaccessible.

The government has also prioritized renewable energy in its electrification efforts. Solar micro-grids and wind power have been deployed extensively in areas where traditional grid connections were not feasible. These initiatives have contributed to India’s larger goal of achieving 50% renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Experts believe that universal electricity access will have long-term economic and social benefits, reducing poverty and improving healthcare and education outcomes. As India celebrates this achievement, it sets a global example of how innovative policies and strong execution can bring about transformative change.
