      • India’s Solar Power Sector Hits 150 GW Milestone

India’s solar power sector has reached a remarkable milestone, with the nation’s installed capacity hitting 150 gigawatts (GW) as of February 2025.

      March 6, 2025
India’s solar power sector has achieved a record milestone, with the country’s installed capacity reaching 150 gigawatts (GW) as of February 2025. This accomplishment reaffirms India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy and underscores its commitment to combating climate change.

The rapid expansion of solar power has been driven by the government’s ambitious targets under the National Solar Mission, which aims to achieve 280 GW of solar capacity by 2030. Over the past decade, India has introduced various incentives, such as subsidies for solar rooftop installations, tax exemptions, and funding for large-scale solar parks.

States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu have emerged as leaders in solar energy production, hosting some of the world’s largest solar farms. The Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan, for example, spans over 14,000 acres and produces enough energy to power millions of households.

India’s focus on renewable energy has also attracted significant foreign investment. Global giants like Tesla, TotalEnergies, and SoftBank have invested in Indian solar projects, while domestic companies such as Adani Green Energy and Tata Power continue to expand their portfolios.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the milestone, stating, "India’s renewable energy journey is an example of how a nation can balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. Solar energy is not just powering our homes but also our dreams of a sustainable future."

In addition to utility-scale projects, decentralized solar power systems have gained traction in rural areas, providing reliable electricity to off-grid communities. Innovations such as solar-powered irrigation pumps and cold storage facilities have also benefited farmers, boosting agricultural productivity.

As India continues to lead the way in solar energy, experts believe the sector will play a critical role in meeting the country’s growing energy demands while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. With its sights set on becoming a net-zero emissions economy by 2070, India’s solar revolution is just beginning.
