The vaccine, known as MelanoVac, is designed to train the immune system to recognize and attack melanoma cells, offering hope to patients with advanced skin cancer.
MelanoVac works by targeting neoantigens, unique proteins that are produced by cancer cells as they mutate. By identifying these proteins, the vaccine stimulates the immune system to mount a robust response against melanoma cells, reducing the risk of recurrence. The trial involved 150 patients with stage III and IV melanoma, all of whom had undergone surgery to remove tumors. Participants who received the vaccine experienced a 60% reduction in the risk of cancer returning within two years, compared to those who did not.
