Pharmacological properties
Testosterone propionate is a drug that has androgenic and anabolic effects (i.e., regulates the function of the male sex glands and protein synthesis). Testosterone stimulates the function and development of the vulva, seminal vesicles, prostate, and secondary male sexual characteristics.
Provides stimulation of spermatogenesis, participates in the formation of male sexual behavior. Under its influence, the production of follicle-stimulating and luteotropic hormones decreases.
Testosterone is an antagonist of the female sex hormones estrogen. It has an antitumor effect on neoplasms in the mammary glands in women.
The drug has an anabolic effect and, as a result, reduces the amount of body fat, stimulates protein synthesis and retains in the body a number of elements necessary for it.
Under the influence of this hormone, muscle mass grows, the degree of calcium fixation in bones increases. If the patient receives sufficient protein nutrition during the use of Testosterone propionate, the production of erythropoietin, one of the kidney hormones that controls erythropoiesis, is also stimulated.
Indications for use
For men:
- sexual underdevelopment;

For women:
- breast and ovarian cancer in women under the age of 60;
- dysfunctional uterine bleeding in elderly women;
climacteric vascular and nervous disorders (in the presence of contraindications to estrogenic or female sex hormone drugs).
Method of administration and dosage
Testosterone propionate is intended for intramuscular or subcutaneous administration. A single dose is usually 1 ml of solution. The interval between injections is 1-2 days.
Recommended dosage regimens:
- eunuchoidism, underdevelopment of the gonads, acromegaly: 25 mg of testosterone daily or 25-50 mg every 1-2 days. The duration of treatment is individual, depending on the severity of the effect. Later, the patient is transferred to maintenance therapy - 5-10 mg daily or every other day;
- prostatic hypertrophy: 10 mg every other day for 1-2 months;
- impotence of endocrine origin, menopause in men: 10 mg daily or 25 mg 2–3 times a week for a course of 1–2 months.

In women, overdose may cause cessation of menstruation.
Precautions
Doctors do not recommend the use of testosterone for muscle development and endurance. Before prescribing the drug, men are shown a medical examination to exclude prostate cancer, since Testosterone propionate increases the risk of developing prostatic hyperplasia.
When administering the drug, care should be taken to prevent the solution from entering the vessels. In order to avoid the development of undesirable side effects, including local ones, it is recommended to inject the agent very slowly.
During treatment, monitoring of the condition of patients suffering from migraine, kidney disease, arterial hypertension, heart failure, epilepsy is required. Testosterone propionate increases the tendency to thrombosis, therefore, it should be used with caution in the treatment of patients who have recently undergone trauma or surgery.
Interaction with other medicinal products
According to the instructions, Testosterone propionate enhances the effects of anabolic drugs, vitamins, oral anticoagulants and drugs containing phosphorus and calcium. Its effect is reduced by barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenylbutazone, rifampicin, ethanol.
With the simultaneous use of adrenocorticotropic hormone or corticosteroids, the risk of edema increases.
Under the influence of androgens, it is possible to increase the action of hypoglycemic drugs and insulin, which may require a decrease in their dose.
Testosterone slows down the elimination of cyclosporine.
For patients with severe hypogonadism, Testosterone propionate is recommended to be used in combination with estrogens and agents that stimulate the function of the thyroid gland.
Special instructions
In the case of prolonged therapy, it is necessary to monitor the following indicators: the functional state of the liver, testosterone concentration, hemoglobin level and hematocrit. In children, testosterone can cause accelerated growth, premature closure of the growth zone of the pineal gland and too active maturation of bone tissue.
Application in childhood:
There are no data on the safety of testosterone use in childhood, so the drug is not prescribed in pediatrics.
In case of impaired renal function, Testosterone propionate is contraindicated.
